Chevrolet – On 21 April 2026, General Motors unveiled the 2027 Chevrolet Sonic, a brand-new compact crossover meant to claw market share from the Renault Kardian and Fiat Pulse.
- In short: The Sonic’s AI-guided design and nearly 20 cm of ground clearance put Chevy in the thick of Brazil’s subcompact-SUV battle.
AI development delivers upscale finesse
Engineered entirely in a virtual environment, the Sonic is the first Chevrolet in South America to use artificial intelligence from sketch to prototype. GM says the process shortened development cycles and honed aerodynamics. Measuring 4.23 m long, 1.77 m wide and 1.53 m tall, the newcomer fits neatly between the Onix Activ and Tracker while riding higher than both.
Projector headlamps paired with a full LED signature boost light output by about 20 percent versus traditional units, according to GM. Functional brake-cooling ducts and a multi-piece bumper reference the larger Equinox EV, signaling an intent to deliver premium touches in a smaller package. The move tracks with a wider industry push; Car and Driver highlights steady global growth in subcompact-SUV demand.
“Integrating engineering and design from the earliest sketches gave us greater precision in the structural definition and refinement of body surfaces,” GM engineers said during the launch webcast.
Positioning in a fast-crowding segment
Brazil’s crossover sales have surged, drawing new entries like the upcoming Jeep Avenger and a Hyundai rival due from São Paulo. Against that backdrop, the Sonic offers a 50 kg-rated roof rack, protective lower cladding and 17-inch wheels with Redline-inspired accents to boost street presence.
Inside, Chevrolet’s Virtual Cockpit System merges a digital cluster and infotainment screen into one sweeping panel—a layout normally found in larger SUVs. Soft-touch trim and extra-padded seats (borrowed from the Tracker) aim to raise perceived quality, while the Chevrolet Intelligent Driving suite adds advanced driver assists. A taller seating position enhances outward visibility, reinforcing the crossover’s urban-friendly brief.
