Jeremy Robbins's script rarely tries to reinvent the genre; it delivers a comfortably familiar survival arc but stumbles with over-explanatory beats. Key revelations—like Ben's true intentions—are delivered through blunt exposition rather than trust in the audience, which blunts some of the tension.
Still, Kormákur's direction (he previously tackled large-scale survival in Everest) and Theron's commitment—she dirties, bleeds and sells each fall and scuffle—give the film an urgency the screenplay alone cannot sustain. Taron Egerton provides the necessary balance of charm and latent threat to keep the central relationship taut.
